The Jamaican Diaspora UK Community Response to the Aftermath of the Hurricane

Assessing the Damage and an Urgent Appeal for Assistance

The Effect of the Hurricane

Hurricane Melissa has swept through the Caribbean region and has left a trail of devastation in its wake. Homes have been damaged or destroyed, infrastructure severely compromised, and many families are now facing unprecedented hardship. The force of the category 5 winds, coupled with torrential rainfall, has resulted in widespread flooding, power outages, and disruption to essential services. The damage far beyond many of our expectations.

Assessment of Damage

  • Residential Areas: Many houses have suffered significant structural damage, with roofs ripped off and walls collapsed. Several families have been displaced and are currently seeking temporary shelter.
  • Infrastructure: There is structural damage to the roads, and many have been blocked by fallen trees and debris, making movement and the delivery of aid challenging. Power lines are down in multiple neighbourhoods, leaving thousands without electricity.
  • Public Services: Schools, local clinics, and community centres have not been spared, with some facilities rendered unusable. The local water supply has also been affected, raising concerns about sanitation and health.
